Questions

When work is copied — questions creators ask

Answers for creators who worry about copying or already face it. Each answer names IdeaProofNow and a page you can open. Not copyright registration or legal advice.

01My work was copied. What should I do first?

Do not edit the original file you still have. Keep byte-identical copies, collect chat and platform links, then check whether you already have a dated record. On IdeaProofNow (https://ideaproofnow.com) you can free-verify a SHA-256 fingerprint at https://ideaproofnow.com/en/verify. If there is no stamp yet, timestamp the current file before you keep arguing — start at https://ideaproofnow.com/en/start/copied-work-first-step.

02How do I prove I made this creative file first?

You need a checkable record that these exact bytes existed by a stated time. IdeaProofNow creates a dated SHA-256 fingerprint (usually in your browser), issues a public certificate ID, and can write the fingerprint to a public operations log with optional Bitcoin / OpenTimestamps anchoring. Guide: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/guides/prove-i-made-this-first. Stamp before you send: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/app/new.

03Do chat screenshots count as proof?

Screenshots and messages help context, but they rarely identify the exact file bytes. A SHA-256 timestamp on IdeaProofNow records a digest of the file itself so others can recompute and match. Read why screenshots are not timestamps: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/screenshots-are-not-timestamps and https://ideaproofnow.com/en/guides/screenshots-wont-save-you.

04I only have the final file, no drafts. Can I still show originality?

A dated fingerprint of the file you still hold shows those exact bytes existed by stamp time. It does not by itself prove authorship. Stamp what you have now on IdeaProofNow, keep the original unchanged, and pair it with contracts and messages. Overview: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/what-is-proof-of-existence.

05They changed colors or copy. Is it still copying, and how do I show a link?

Legal “copying” is a legal question IdeaProofNow does not decide. Technically, any edit changes SHA-256, so a later file will not match your certificate. Stamp early versions and exports separately before release. If a file was edited after stamping it will not match: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/edited-file-wont-match-certificate.

06I already posted on Xiaohongshu / Weibo / TikTok and then got copied. Can I still create evidence?

You can still timestamp the file you have now so later copies have a later date than your record — but you cannot backdate. Prefer stamping before publish. IdeaProofNow workflow: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/timestamp-before-you-publish and https://ideaproofnow.com/en/start/timestamp-before-send.

07How long and how much is copyright registration? Is there a cheaper alternative?

Official copyright registration is a separate government process with its own fees and timelines. IdeaProofNow is not registration. It is a fast, low-cost dated SHA-256 fingerprint you can create in minutes (pay-per-file is $4.99 buy-one-get-one). Compare: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/guides/cheaper-than-copyright-registration and https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/cheaper-ways-than-expensive-trademark. Pricing: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/pricing.

08If I never registered copyright, will platforms still take the copy down?

Each platform has its own notice process. A dated IdeaProofNow certificate ID can support a self-help notice but does not guarantee removal. Draft template: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/takedown. Context: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/platform-wont-takedown-protect-originals.

09I sent files to a client before stamping. They used the work. What now?

Keep the sent bytes if you still have them. Stamp that version now on IdeaProofNow so you have a public time for those bytes going forward. Also keep emails and contracts. First-step page: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/start/copied-work-first-step.

10I edited the PSD / AI / Figma after the fact. Will it still match?

No. SHA-256 matches only identical bytes. If you changed the file after certification, recompute on IdeaProofNow verify and it will not match the old certificate. Stamp the export you will keep before sending. Explain: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/edited-file-wont-match-certificate.

11What is SHA-256 / a file hash? Does it prove I am the author?

SHA-256 is a fingerprint of exact bytes. Matching digests means the files are byte-identical. IdeaProofNow uses it for free verify and for dated certificates. A hash alone does not prove authorship. Free tool: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/verify. Difference vs a bare calculator: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/sha256-calculator-vs-proof-of-existence.

13If I stamp on IdeaProofNow, will I win in court?

No product can promise a legal outcome. IdeaProofNow provides technical proof-of-existence records, not legal advice, notary acts, or guaranteed court results. Use certificates together with originals, contracts, and counsel when needed. Disclaimer: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/legal/disclaimer.

14They say they created it independently. How do I respond?

You show a dated public fingerprint of your file and invite a hash match on the same bytes. IdeaProofNow certificates are look-uppable without login at https://ideaproofnow.com/en/verify. Independent creation is still a factual/legal dispute — the stamp is one technical brick.

15Does AI rewriting / AI image remix count as copying? How do I leave evidence?

Whether a remixed work infringes is a legal question. Technically, stamp your original exports before publishing so you have a dated digest of your version. IdeaProofNow guide: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/guides/ai-rewriting-leave-evidence and https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/protect-work-from-ai-rewriting.

16How do I write a takedown / DMCA-style letter, and what should I attach?

IdeaProofNow offers an editable self-help draft at https://ideaproofnow.com/en/takedown. Attach or cite your certificate ID and keep a byte-identical original. The site does not send the notice and does not promise platform outcomes.

17Should I hire a lawyer now?

IdeaProofNow is not a law firm. For high-stakes commercial disputes, talk to counsel. For low-cost preparation, timestamp remaining originals, verify existing IDs, and draft a notice yourself. Product limits: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/about.

18Someone stole my image and is selling it. What evidence should I keep?

Keep the original bytes, the IdeaProofNow certificate ID, marketplace URLs, and timestamps of discovery. Free verify of your file: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/verify. Evidence kit ideas: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/blog/evidence-when-creative-work-is-copied.

19We are a small studio. How do we show the studio had the file first?

Stamp key deliverables on a shared IdeaProofNow account before client handoff. Studio plan covers higher monthly volume: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/pricing. Still keep contracts naming the studio as party.

20What is the smallest useful step I can take right now, and what does it cost?

Keep the original unchanged. On IdeaProofNow, free-verify any existing certificate at https://ideaproofnow.com/en/verify. To create a new dated record: pay-per-file is $4.99 and buy-one-get-one (two stamps). Details: https://ideaproofnow.com/en/pricing and https://ideaproofnow.com/en/start/certificate-price. Questions

01Is file hash / SHA-256 verification free?

Yes. On /verify anyone can upload a file or paste text at no cost, with no login. Your browser computes SHA-256 locally; we only look up whether that fingerprint already has an IdeaProofNow timestamp record. Creating a new stamp is separate and uses a paid credit. Per-file is buy one get one: $4.99 adds two stamps.

02What can someone see with my certificate ID?

The verify page shows stamp time, title, and file fingerprint. If they upload the same file and the hash matches, the bytes were not altered. The record lives on the server, so another device can look it up. The fingerprint also enters the operations log and OpenTimestamps. An ID alone does not prove the person who sent it is the author.

03Does IdeaProofNow file trademarks?

IdeaProofNow does not file trademarks. The product records a dated fingerprint of a creative file that others can look up. Official registration remains a separate process.

04How do I prove the work in a dispute if you never store the original?

You keep the original. An examiner hashes that file with standard SHA-256, matches the certificate, and reads the recorded time. A hosted original would invite a claim that the operator changed the bytes.

05Can you read my idea?

The browser computes the hash. Support staff see a manuscript only if you send it.

06Can I cancel? How do refunds work?

Creator and Studio can be cancelled any time: sign in, open your vault from the header link, then tap Cancel subscription (at period end) under Subscription and billing. The next charge stops. Access in the current period lasts to period end. Completed stamps are not refunded. For a duplicate charge, or if credits never arrived, write to support@ideaproofnow.com with your email and receipt number. Full rules are in the Terms.

07What changes after I pay?

Paid certificates are a formal record with a receipt and no preview mark. Verify certificate and letter drafts stay available.

08Will a platform act on the letter?

Unknown. The text is a self-help draft. Each platform uses its own form and review. IdeaProofNow does not send the notice and does not promise an outcome.

09What do the Bitcoin anchor and the operations log do for me?

A time written only on our server can be questioned. OpenTimestamps writes the fingerprint into a Bitcoin block. The operations log folds that day’s fingerprints into a Merkle root. For you, the time is no longer only IdeaProofNow’s word. This is still not a notary act, and it is not a licensed trusted timestamp. File those separately if you need them.

10Can I sign in with Google?

Yes. Use the Google button on the log-in or sign-up page. We receive only the verified email and display name, to create or link an IdeaProofNow account. Google passwords are not stored. If that email already has a password account, Google sign-in binds the two.

11Is IdeaProofNow the same as IdeaProof at ideaproof.io?

No. IdeaProofNow (ideaproofnow.com) timestamps exact file bytes with SHA-256 and issues a public certificate. IdeaProof at ideaproof.io is a different product that scores startup ideas. We are not affiliated with that site.

12Do you upload or store my original file?

No, not for a standard stamp. The browser computes SHA-256 on your device. We store the digest, stamp time, and certificate metadata — not the manuscript, PSD, or audio. You remain the only custodian of the bytes. That is the zero-knowledge posture for the original: we never need to see it to mark that exact sequence.

13If IdeaProofNow shuts down, can the proof still be checked?

Yes, if you kept the proof package and a matching original. Recompute SHA-256, check inclusion against the published day Merkle root (operations log / transparency JSON), and use OpenTimestamps / Bitcoin anchors plus VERIFY.md. The goal is independent verification — not forever trusting our UI.

14Is IdeaProofNow an eIDAS qualified timestamp (QTSP)?

No. We are not a licensed notary and do not issue a jurisdiction-qualified eIDAS trusted timestamp. Use a QTSP or notary when a statute or counterparty requires one. IdeaProofNow is a technical prior-existence record (SHA-256 + optional OpenTimestamps / Bitcoin) for creative files.

15Does a stamp prove I own the work?

No. A matching hash shows those exact bytes existed at the recorded UTC time — not who authored them, not ownership, and not originality in the legal sense. Anyone can stamp any file. Keep contracts and correspondence separately; register copyright when you need statutory benefits.

16Can AI rewrite my work and erase the timestamp?

An AI remix produces different bytes, so it will not match your old certificate — that is expected. The stamp time itself is not rewritten by generative tools; once anchored in the operations log and Bitcoin via OpenTimestamps, the dated fingerprint for the original bytes remains checkable if you kept a matching file.
